Korea’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism plans to build special venue for K-Pop artists

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 08:09 AM PST

Korea’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism is scheduled to hold a seminar on February 29th to discuss the need to construct a special arena-style venue, and to examine the direction it needs to go and what key issues they may face. Additionally, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism will also announce its plans to construct a special venue for K-Pop artists.

The Ministry revealed through a press release on the 28th the difficulties that many popular K-Pop artists face in finding a big venue for their shows, stating “The popular music market has increased over 74% in just the past year alone (the average annual increase is about 40%). Despite this impressive growth, the Olympic Stadium is the only indoor venue in Korea that is large enough to accommodate over 10,000 people.”

They continued to explain the need to construct a large venue, saying “Currently, a lot of domestic agencies are sending their artists on arena tours overseas, but in our own country the infrastructure for supporting popular culture is very poor and top musicians cannot properly express their passion and creativity in their own country due to limitations in stage setup, sound quality, lights, and facilities.”

Also, the ministry elaborated that “the government, in order to further aid K-Pop in becoming a global phenomenon and to spread its foundation, needs to establish a better venue infrastructure. The first step is to discuss the need to build an arena-style venue, the direction it should take, and any other key issues with professionals and experts in the music industry in order to receive varied feedback.”

In addition to improving the K-Pop venue infrastructure, the Ministry also plans to construct a multimedia mega-facility with studios, rehearsal rooms, and 3D imaging equipment.

CNBLUE holds concert in Bangkok, Thailand; donates to Thai Red Cross Society

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 04:07 AM PST

CNBLUE performed at Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand on February 25th for their ‘BLUESTORM‘ Asia tour.

The group was originally scheduled to hold their solo concert in Thailand on November 19th of last year, but the event was postponed due to the massive floods in Thailand. At the concert on the 25th, CNBLUE performed their hit songs, “I’m a Loner,” “Love,” “Intuition,” and “Love Girl“, in addition to other songs to round out the setlist total to 24 songs. In particular, their Japanese singles “In My Head” and “Where You Are” drew a hot response from the some 10,000 fans that packed the arena.

Additionally, CNBLUE revealed at a press conference held the day before the concert, that after they had heard of the devastation the floods had caused, they auctioned off outfits they had worn for the entire month of December. All proceeds from this auction would be donated to the Princess Pa Foundation (Thai Red Cross Society) to help aid the victims of the floods.

After the concert was over, CNBLUE stated, “We were so sorry to hear about the Thai floods that postponed our concert, so we worked hard to try to make this concert something that could comfort the citizens of Thailand who suffered from the flood.” They added, “We hope that our donation can give even a little bit of hope to the victims of the flood, and help in the recovery efforts.”

CNBLUE’s next stop for their Asia tour is Taiwan, and they are busy preparing a new album for their Korean comeback.

Fellow artists praise John Park’s debut album

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 03:48 AM PST

Singer John Park recently released his very first solo album, and his fellow artists cannot stop raving about the tracks.

Title song “Falling” from John’s album ‘Knock‘ made an impressive debut, securing high ranks on the music charts after being released on February 22nd.

But the other four songs on the album including "Falling", "Why Is It Like That", "It's Not Supposed To Be This Way" and "Good Day” are also receiving highly favorable remarks from fellow celebrities.

Musician Jung Jae Hyung recently wrote on his official Twitter page, “Headed home after ending rehearsals for SBSYOU&I‘, and playing John Park’s ‘That Song’ on infinite repeat in the car. Sounds good!

Girls’ Generation member Yoona also raved about “That Song”, saying she could “feel the emotional sensibility of Kim Dong Ryul through the song,” capturing the attention of fans.

Singer Lyn who is earning praise for her ‘Moon-Sun‘ soundtrack “Back In Time” also praised the rookie singer by writing on his Twitter page, “Hey Sung Kyu (John’s Korean name)~ I find joy in listening to your album these days. I saw your performance on Music Bank. Make sure you take care of yourself.”

And Girls’ Day member Minah recommended John Park’s new album to her fans saying, “John Park’s ‘It’s Not Supposed To Be This Way‘ is really stirring my heart, I can’t seem to fall asleep. Everyone should give it a listen.”

But this sort of response was almost expected. Veteran singer Kim Dong Ryul personally produced John’s first album, and the consensus seems to be that the album is of top-notch quality.

The sound of the album is different from the trends today, and the music seems to effortlessly move the hearts of listeners everywhere.

John Park singed with entertainment label Music Farm last April, the agency home to talented musicians such as Kim Dong Ryul, Lee Juk, Lee Sang Soon, Cho Won Sun, Jung Sun Yong, Cherry Filter, and more.

‘Knock’ is John’s first release in a year, and with it, he has made a graceful yet successful entrance onto the K-pop music scene.

His album has secured the #1 spot on the Hanteo charts selling 13,000 copies the first day of release, and his title song “Falling” was written by European band Mamas Gun‘s Andy Platts. John was active when it came to putting his album together, personally producing and penning the lyrics to “Falling”.

John also stole the hearts and ears of his fans with his performance on KBS2‘s ‘Music Bank‘ on February 24th.

[Spoilers: Dream High 2] ‘Couple shipping’ becomes more difficult

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 01:56 AM PST

With the development of the various love lines in its ninth episode, ‘Dream High 2‘ is making couple shipping more difficult for viewers. As the chemistry between the four main leads begins to sizzle, the writers are flirting with the alternative pairings of JB-Hyesung (Kang Sora) and Rian (T-ara‘s Jiyeon)-Yoojin (2AM‘s Jinwoon), while still hinting at the primary relationships, Hyesung-Yoojin and JB-Rian.

Upon Rian’s fainting during the performance, Yoojin rushes up to piggyback her to the hospital, in which JB follows closely behind worriedly as he offers his car. Rian and Yoojin become closer friends and each other’s support systems, as Yoojin watches over Rian and teases her about her sleeping habits. With Yoojin’s anxious expressions and frantic calls for the nurses, the two take a more definitive step into the friendship field, allowing viewers to speculate the possibility of a Yoojin-Rian relationship.

On the other end of the spectrum, the relationship between Hyesung and JB has been stepping it up as their ‘lunch date’ allowed viewers a peek at the true emotions of JB. As Hyesung returns to school, JB greets her enthusiastically with a ‘cover dance’, much like he had done in the beginning of the series, only this time with genuine kindness, rather than a condescending view. In addition, after JB helps Hyesung transform into a princess with makeup and new clothes, she tells JB, “You don’t need to worry that I’ll misunderstand about what happened between us at the church. I won’t take what you said to me to heart“, to which JB replies hesitantly, “I’m not worried about that“, opening up the possibility that JB has yet to have the confidence to express his feelings for her.

However, the writers also still suggest the undercurrent of the main relationships. Yoojin’s indignant jealousy as he suspects that Hyesung was out having fun with JB and his support for her before the performance, in addition to JB’s tulips for Rian and her cares for his shoes suggests the love lines won’t be resolved quite so easily.

[Note: This post reflects the opinions of the author and not necessarily those of allkpop.]

I might have to eat my words on the chemistry between Hyesung and JB with the recent love developments. What made the love lines sweeter and more adorable were their tentative steps into the ‘love’ territory. The church scene in the previous episode had screamed ‘awkward’, not only because of the head-scratching fact of why one would abruptly drink a random teapot (and how one could get drunk in a matter of a few seconds), but JB’s leap into a love confession. With the tentative steps back into the ‘friendship territory’, it’s enjoyable to see JB’s grappling with his own growing love and emotions for Hyesung with his own attachment for Rian.

In addition, the teasing banter between Yoojin and Rian allows not only the viewers to see the more vulnerable aspect of Rian’s character, but again helps balance the JB-Hyesung development. The little criticism in the Yoojin-Rian loveline is how much Rian is dependent upon Yoojin, in which Yoojin always seems to be saving Rian, the damsel in distress. While Hyesung had previously provided support for JB with a Rubik’s cube and JB is now encouraging Hyesung to reach for her dreams, it would be an interesting development for Rian to help Yoojin define his path to the ‘super idol’ dream.

While the two alternate pairings are heightening the interest, I do hope that the writers integrate the main relationships, JB-Rian and Yoojin-Hyesung. Not only to satisfy my selfish desire to cheer for the pink blossoming relationship between Yoojin and Hyesung (loved his confident statement that Hyesung had a diehard crush for him), but to keep the viewers on their toes. In addition, Rian’s act of throwing JB’s shoes at him does not mean the conclusion of the JB-Rian loveline, but rather the beginning as Rian is detaching herself from pining over the past. Whether it means that she’ll attempt to forget about him or her renewed love for JB in the future, viewers will just have to wait.

What couple will you be shipping?

Big Bang’s TOP is like Lee Gwang Soo

Posted: 28 Feb 2012 01:17 AM PST

In the upcoming episode of “Running Man,” the Big Bang members came on as guests. During the filming, TOP showed a very unexpected and new side of him.

In KBS drama “IRIS,” TOP played a charismatic killer, but here, he showed his clumsy side.

Taeyang commented on the transformation, “Unlike people’s image of TOP, he is the Gwang Soo hyung of Big Bang. He is not cold, but rather he is a soon-doong-ee. In other words, he has his clumsy side.” Soon-doong-ee is a nickname to describe sensitive and clumsy people.

When the “Running Man” members told TOP that his real image is very different from his image on “IRIS,” he said, “The character in my drama is just a character. In real life, I have a gentle personality.”

A “Running Man” staff member said, “TOP had a smile on his face during the game, and surprised everyone with an image that is not tough nor cold.”
