[Interview] TEEN TOP “To be perfectly synced in dance we practiced 9 hours everyday for 3 months”!

Posted: 08 Feb 2012 07:42 AM PST

Idol group TEEN TOP (C.A.P, Niel, Ricky, L.Joe, Changjo & Chunji) has indeed truly become really popular.

TEEN TOP won 1st place on SBS 'Inkigayo' which was broadcasted on the 5th, with the title track of their 2nd mini album 'It's', Crazy, thus claiming the mutizen song. They won consecutively twice as they won their very first 1st place in 1 year and 7 months since debut on KBS 2TV 'Music Bank' on the 3rd. Their name is slowly being known overseas; in Japan they are already receiving the treatment of Hallyu stars. After being produced by SHINHWA's Andy in 2010, they have become one of the music industry's rising star and they seem to bearing fruits of their labor this year. TEEN TOP revealed "We still has a long way to go" but they answered brightly with the wave of their hands, we will work harder as we want to become the idol group who does not mind following the traces of Shinhwa sunbaenim

-You guys have earned the nickname of the 'in-trend' idols.

"It's too generous of a compliment. We're still far from it so we'll work even harder so that we can truly become the trend in the music industry. We like the nickname of 'Earth idols'. The fans gave us this name hoping that we'll be able to go global." (C.A.P)

-You guys are known for your perfectly synced dance. How much did you guys practice?

For 'Crazy' we spent 9 hours a day for 3 months just dancing. But we're still lacking. Even now when our schedule for the day ends, we'll spend another 2 hours at the practice studio to practice before sleeping. It is important that we don't quarrel amongst ourselves. We need to be on good terms so that the choreography will look good. In the beginning we really had a lot of quarrels. But now after understanding one another's personalities, we don't do things that will make us quarrel." (Niel)

-Wasn't it tiring because of the perfectly synced dance

We've already performed 'Crazy' over a 100 times. There was once we danced it 30 times in a day but now we're used to those kind of situations. More importantly it's the burden that comes along with it. When we make a comeback, the fans will see the choreography first. It isn't easy always trying to exceed expectations." (Ricky)

-Your popularity in Japan is quite amazing

"We have still yet to officially debut there but there are many people who like us. The first time we went to Japan there were many fans at the airport. We're so surprised that our jaws dropped. Last december we held a fanmeeting and 5000 people came. Because there weren't enough seats we had to add another show." (Changjo)

-The way to capture the hearts of the Japanese fans.

"We held a 'hi touch session' in Japan, while we did high fives we added 'Ha ya'. I think they'll never forget once they touched our hands." (Niel)

-The most memorable fan.

"The Japanese fans are of a diverse age range. There were fans who were couples; and grandfathers, grandmothers. There was once male fan who dressed up as Super Mario at the  fanmeeting and not too long ago we met again in Korea. He dressed up as Super Mario again and he told us he came to
Korea to see us." (L.Joe)

-People are saying that you're the idol group that girl groups like.

"Even if we're appearing on the same broadcast we don't get to share waiting rooms with the girl groups. There's really no chance for us to become close so I don't know. Even when we meet at the corridors we greet one another with a 90 degree bow so we don't even get to see their faces. Haha." (Chunji)

-The girl group that TEEN TOP likes.

"We like Miss A. Their performances are a piece of art. From their vocals to expressions, they give off the vibe of female warriors. We want to have a combined stage for once. We have been fans of Wonder Girls sunsaengnim since before our debut. We like the addictive songs that contain the style of Wonder Girls. We really want to emulate their courage of advancing into America." (Niel)

-We're curious about what TEEN TOP does 24 hours.

"Because our schedules are different all the time so we don't have a fixed time for meals and sleep. Yesterday we woke up at 8am and we were working till 2am.Recently Niel has become the late riser. He's already used to the sounds of the alarm clock so he can't be woken up by it. We gave him a new clock but he continues sleeping after putting the alarm clock into the drawer. Haha." (C.A.P)

-After your debut, did you guys get any break.
"We didn't. We still do not have to take a break. We want to be even more tired out. Our company gave us a day off during the Lunar New Year. We all went to catch the movies, "Face Maker" "Mission Impossible 4" "Perfect Game" "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island"; no member watched the same movie." (Ricky)

-You're the singers whom hit producers want to work with.

"Maybe it's because we've worked with Bang Shihyuk, Brave Brothers sunsaengnims. They have been of great help to reach our current position. In the future when we become even more successful, we want to return the kindness." (L.Joe)
-Your rivals.
"Recently I had goosebumps while watching Block B's music video. Their style is really cool. The members are already involved in writing their own songs. We have to learn from them their diligence. I think we'll be able to hear our L.Joe's compositions maybe next year in our album." (C.A.P)
-You've achieved the 1st place on music programmes you have dreamt of. What's your next goal.
"We want to win a bonsang at the year-end ceremonies. After we solidify our position in Korea, we are thinking of official Japanese activities. Now we can gather 5000 people for our performances. We'll work harder even more; we really want to fill up 50,000 seats at the Tokyo Dome." (Chunji)

'Surprise-idols' – 'Congestion causing-idols' The extent of their popularity

TEEN TOP's hot popularity has surprised many.
On the 1st at an album retail shop in Gwangju Chong Jungro, TEEN TOP held a autographed session which caused many fans to gather and the police were mobilised to disperse the crowd.
There were throngs of people outside the shop who had waited to see TEEN TOP even before the autograph session had started. When the autograph session had ended, because of the amont of fans, TEEN TOP took close to an hour before they could leave the shop.
Because of the complaints from the retailers nearby, the police was mobilised, after dispersing the surrounding crowd, TEEN TOP was finally able to leave the venue of the autograph session.
The person in charge of the album retail shop was surprised "We have had many autograph sessions recently but we have never had so many people gathered here before" "TEEN TOP's popularity is really shocking"
Also parents of elementary, middle, high school students had many calls and complain to TEEN TOP's company which engaged the telephone lines. In order to watch the music broadcasts which TEEN TOP appears on, they have to leave the house early in the morning and the parents can only let out a sigh.

TEEN TOP's company received a number of calls from parents "In order to go for the public broadcasts, they have to get up early in the morning to prepare but there aren't any public transport available them so we have to fetch them there ourselves", "They obviously don't know the way to the broadcast station but they say they have to leave early with their friends so they won't miss the reporting time. The broadcast starts late so I don't understand why have to report so early" etc…

Recently, TEEN TOP's cuss word controversy had stirred up the internet. Following which producer Brave Brothers explained that "L.Joe's "like hell" had to be rapped quickly so it might get misheard as a cuss word. It is not our intention. 'Crazy' has a BPM of 140, and it's one of the faster songs that's why something like this has happened'.
The perfect balance of individuality and teamwork
The TEEN TOP members have their own individual uniqueness like the idols at their peak – DBSK, Big Bang, 2PM, and at the same time they show great harmony which is why they have the potential for great development. The vocals are Niel and Chunji, rappers are C.A.P and L.Joe and the dancers are Ricky and Changjo; the defined distribution of roles is to their advantage. Having the star quality, members Niel and Ricky who were child actors have endless potential.
One of their strengths is that TEEN TOP is highly focused and they are fast learners. Brave Brothers spoke of TEEN TOP "When I give them something to do they exceed my expectations and as a producer, TEEN TOP is a group I covet for"
A relevant personnel of the music industry predicted "They have the energy and precision in their perfectly synced dance, along with the members' individual charms and as a group they have outstanding style. TEEN TOP has great teamwork and they will become Korea's representative best idols"

[News] K-Pop Singers Target Global Market

Posted: 08 Feb 2012 05:24 AM PST

K-pop seems ready to take the world by storm this year to capitalize on the momentum of the resurgent Korean Wave, with leading bands such as Girls' Generation, Big Bang, and JYJ staging world tours or debuting overseas in the coming months.

Big Bang plan to launch their first world tour next month, with 25 cities in 16 countries packed into their whistle-stop itinerary. The group will return to the stage with their mini album "Alive" on Feb. 29, and will tour Asia, North and South America, and Europe after a concert in Seoul on March 2.

Experts from around the world will participate in directing and producing their world tour as production agency Live Nation, which formerly managed the tours of Madonna and U2, has signed a deal with the band's management agency, YG Entertainment.

Furthermore, famous creative director and choreographer Laurieann Gibson, who has worked for the likes of Michael Jackson, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé, will help oversee their world tour. And Leroy Bennett, who has worked with Paul McCartney and the Eagles, among others, will be in charge of stage and lighting design.

Girls' Generation, which drew much attention with their recent appearances on CBS' "The David Letterman Show" and ABC's "Live! with Kelly," plan to release their first album in Europe on Monday.

"The Boys" will be released by Universal Music Group's French label Polydor. This will be first album on the Continent by a Korean band since Koreana, a family act that gained worldwide fame by performing at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, released a French-language single in the mid-1970s.

The girls' agency SM Entertainment said their potential beyond Asia is now being recognized after they participated in a large ensemble performance of K-pop bands in Paris last year called "SM Town Live."

Meanwhile, boy band BEAST recently held a series of concerts in Brazil and England. The group will kick off their world tour on Sunday, which takes them to 21 cities in 14 countries including China, Europe, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, and the U.S., starting with Berlin in Germany.

JYJ, the first idol group from Korea to hold solo concerts in Spain and Germany, will continue their extended world tour in Chile on March 9 and Peru two days later.

Meanwhile, Super Junior recently gave concerts in Japan and Taiwan, and will head to the U.S., Europe and South America for more performances after staging a concert in Singapore late next week.

"Along with their word tours, K-pop singers should sharpen their skills and diversify their musical repertoires to sustain their popularity," said music critic Im Jin-mo. "Regardless of their commercial success overseas, they need to recognize that they can be cultural ambassadors to deliver Korean culture to the world."

Following which producer Brave Brothers explained that "L.Joe's "like heck" had to be rapped quickly so it might get misheard as a cuss word.

[INT] TEEN TOP “To be perfectly synced in dance we practiced 9 hours everyday for 3 months”

Posted: 08 Feb 2012 04:58 AM PST

After being produced by SHINHWA's Andy in 2010, they have become one of the music industry's rising star and they seem to bearing fruits of their labour this year.

How much did you guys practise?

For 'Crazy' we spent 9 hours a day for 3 months just dancing. But we're still lacking. Even now when our schedule for the day ends, we'll spend another 2 hours at the practice studio to practise before sleeping. It is important that we don't quarrel amongst ourselves. We need to be on good terms so that the choreography will look good. In the beginning we really had alot of quarrels.

Yesterday we woke up at 8am and we were working till 2am. Recently Niel has become the late riser.

[NEWS] Big Bang to shoot new MV in New York + YG talks about Big Bang's comeback and solo plans starting with Daesung

Posted: 08 Feb 2012 04:55 AM PST

Yang Hyunsuk, producer and CEO of YG Entertainment, who just celebrated their 15th anniversary, remembers 2011 as a very difficult year. Daesung and G-Dragon, two friends who he has been taking care of since they were young, got involved in some troubles. Even though they're better now, Yang admits that at that time, it was really difficult.

"Last year was the worst year for us. They were friends who I took care of from when they were 13, and even I, found it difficult. Those were my thoughts as a parent. When I was running YG for 15 years, I wanted to give the kids a lot of freedom. However, I started finding restriction important too."

He says that since these never happened during his days with "Seotaeji and Boys", he found it hard to handle. But what happened already happened and he had to quickly admit that and get over it. As YG said himself, he both disciplined and supported BIGBANG like a parent or an uncle, rather than an older brother, and that's why he feels the most guilt towards BIGBANG."

"Not only did I learn a lot, I feel BIGBANG did too. Last year, BIGBANG hardly went outside and just stayed together in the studio, making them closer to each other. If nothing happened, they probably would have spent more time outside the studio and not show this much determination. It became an extremely bitter, but the best medicine. Most singers find it difficult to stay together for 5 years but with them, time only made them stronger."

YG has high hopes for BIGBANG this year. He plans to put all his energy into BIGBANG, who has been announced to do a World Tour.

"As a producer, I think that the whole world is watching now. When creating content, I want to be more detailed and spend a lot of energy into the music video as well."

BIGBANG will soon be going to New York to shoot a music video. They will be spending a lot of money to make it grand-scaled. Though YG has been careful about spending a lot of money, it's time for BIGBANG to take off again so he won't be too careful this time. YG has always been focused on quality over quantity. From 1TYM, BIG MAMA, SE7EN, BIGBANG and 2NE1, YG has always been very confident about their music. This is one of the reasons why he kept BIGBANG back while all other companies were having hallyu-concerts around the world.

YG states, "If we see the news or TV today, you see Kpop stars going out and having concerts outside of Korea. I don't want to do that with BIGBANG." His theory is that "the service of going to them will not work, we have to make them come to us." This time, his plan is to make a lot of good content and promote it well through a variety of sources.

Here, he began speaking about what fans are the most curious about: BIGBANG's comeback and world tour.

"BIGBANG's biggest asset is that even though they shine when they are together, they can also bring out their own solo albums. So I think of BIGBANG as six teams, not just one team." YG said that BIGBANG is both "together but separate", and Daesung, who had gone through the most pain, will be the first to release his solo album.

This year, starting with the Korean concerts in March, they plan to have a flawless world tour, within the first half of 2012 in Japan and Asia, then in the latter half in Europe, North America and South America. But YG won't forget about quality, either. YG said "In a stage, sound, lights and video are the most important. People in Korea tend to work separately so we used a lot of Japanese staff, but this time we are working with LIVE NATION, a US company." LIVE NATION is a performance company that has worked with Beyonce and Lady Gaga.

He said that BIGBANG is not one team, but six teams. There is BIGBANG, then Daesung, Seungri, G-Dragon, TOP, Taeyang. They focus when they're working on their solo albums, but also focus during tours for all of them, and they plan to help with both these sides. "We plan to start solos with Daesung. I want all the scars he got last year to be washed away soon." YG is family, and as the head of the house, this is the kind of thoughtful care he will give.
