Will B1A4 be a survivor in the tough music world, ‘war of the stars’?

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 06:54 AM PDT

B1A4 is expected to take over the music scene by a storm.

Despite recent comebacks of K-pop super stars such as Big Bang, 2AM, miss A, and planned comebacks of SHINee, CNBLUE, and Shinhwa, B1A4 will be promoting their new album in the music battle field.

Since its release on the 14th, B1A4′s title song, “Baby I’m Sorry“, from their new album ‘IGNITION‘ has been rapidly climbing various music charts. The song received special attention because B1A4′s very own member, Jinyoung, wrote and produced it.

It hasn’t even been a year since their debut and B1A4′s fan cafe has already exceeded 70,000 members.

Their agency WM Entertainment commented, “The full album was suggested by B1A4 members. Although they felt pressured because their comeback timing coincided with many other super stars, they are very enthusiastic for their comeback with a brand new image. You guys can expect a good comeback.

B1A4 launched their promotion with their highly anticipated comeback stage on the airing of ‘M! Countdown‘, earlier today.

Pictures of Shin Se Kyung’s trainee singer days surface

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 06:05 AM PDT

Actress Shin Se Kyung‘s pictures of when she was a trainee singer is drawing attention after being uploaded onto an online community forum.

The screen caps are from an episode of SBS ‘I Want To Know ; BoA Swallows Japan’ in 2003. In a segment of that episode, it showed Shin Se Kyung when she was in 7th grade training to become a singer for an agency.

In the pictures Shin Se Kyung is fitted in black sweats during dance practice. What is even more impressing is Shin Se Kyung’s curvy, mature body that she had when she was only 14 years old.

Netizens responded to this picture saying, “She had curves even when she was young“, “I’m surprised that she was originally training to be a singer“, and “She seems like she would have been popular even if she debuted in a girl group.”

The reason S.E.S broke up

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 05:46 AM PDT

We felt that disbanding at the height of our popularity would be best.”

On the March 13th broadcast of KBS2′sStar Life Theater‘, actress Eugene opened up about the reason that S.E.S disbanded.

On the show Eugene said, “Our five year contract was over.  After a lot of thinking, we all decided that it would be good for each member to pursue their own dreams and walk their own road.”

She continued, “It is not because we fought, or because our popularity fell,” and refuted the various rumors that had come up regarding the issue.

Not only this, but Eugene showed off a friendship ring that she has with her former members and showed the close friendship that the members still share.

S.E.S was comprised of Eugene, Bada, and Shoo and debuted in 1997 with the song, ‘I’m Your Girl‘ and later with Fin.K.L became the greatest girl groups.  S.E.S disbanded in 2002 after 5 years together, which brought sadness to many fans.

[Review][Single] NU’EST “Face”

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 05:01 AM PDT

Without a doubt, we’ve been seeing an influx of boy bands in K-Pop, and well, it’s getting pretty hard to tell them apart. NU’EST,  however, is lucky that it has a famous sister group, After School, to build some hype for them. Formally known as After School Boys pre-debut, fans held high expectations for the group in terms of visuals and talent much like their female counterparts. Does NU’EST meet up to those standards?

Play the “Face” MV on mute. Yeah, definitely. A quick glance at the MV proves they certainly look the part with squeaky clean choreography and model-status appearance. In fact, the video reminds us a bit of After School‘s own debut MV, “Ah!”

Now let’s turn the volume back up. If you got a scandipop vibe from the track, then your instincts have served you well because this was composed by Swedish composer David Bergman. The low-cut saw synths bouncing in the verses leading to the anthemic rave synths in the chorus with a touch of K-Pop pseudo-string hits, provide a solid skeleton for the track. There’s even a Britney Spears-esque “dubstep” inspired drop that has the boys begging for some cool points. The ideas are all there, but the producers fail to actually pull it off as slick as we would hope them to. A cleaner, more powerful and interesting production would have benefited the track, and I think most of us could have done without the “dubstep” middle8 shoved in the track.

Those who don’t understand the lyrics will find it easier to take notice of the good qualities of the track. But for those who do, I’m sure you guys will agree the lyrics are all over the place, and it’s hard to gather what exactly the boys are trying to point out. The “engrish” in the Korean lyrics does not make sense for the most part, and although they try hard to insert some significance into the lyrics, they come up rather short. No, the boys of NU’EST aren’t serenading about their pretty visage with their debut single, “Face“, rather, they seem to be “facing” or confronting some opposing force or figure (which in this case is the bullying and violence faced by students). Not in a cool way that Brown Eyes Girls did like in “Sixth Sense“, but in a Korean high school brawl kind of way over having your lunch money taken. They go on verbally sparing their opponent calling their insults, feathers, and then comparing their confrontation to the Biblical story of “David and Goliath.” I don’t really know how I’d jam to this when the instrumental is pretty generic as well, but I will admit the chorus melody is pretty addictive.

While After School stepped into K-Pop with a powerful “Korean Pussycat Dolls” concept, NU’EST doesn’t quite leave a lasting first impression. Though we’re impressed by their perfect visuals and mastery of basic idol talents, we’re left hanging expecting for more. Perhaps that’s not so much a bad thing, but with EXO‘s debut inching closer (and I mean literally inching), and SHINee squirming back into their tight pants, what NU’EST could at least do is make sure we don’t forget about them before SM, presumably, begins to dominate over the live stage.

By the way…

It takes 10 seconds for Kim Tae Hee to become T-ara’s Jiyeon?

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 04:57 AM PDT

There has been a lot of fuss between netizens about T-ara‘s Jiyeon being the doppelgänger of actress Kim Tae Hee.

On March 15th, a couple images titled “Transforming Kim Tae Hee into Jiyeon takes only 10 seconds?” has been gaining a lot of attention. The image shows a picture of Kim Tae Hee from one of her cosmetics CF’s and her transformation into Jiyeon using photoshop. After applying some eyeliner and smokey make-up, Jiyeon’s face starts appearing on the picture of one of Korea’s most beautiful actresses.

After viewing this image, netizens claimed that “no wonder why she is called the ‘little Kim Tae Hee’“, I can’t believe she can transform so easily into Jiyeon“, and even “Kim Tae Hee can transform into Jiyeon but the opposite cannot happen…”.

What do you guys think? Do they look alike?

Shinhwa’s comeback has fans of H.O.T. and g.o.d. hopeful for a return

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 04:48 AM PDT

With Shinhwa celebrating their 14th anniversary with a comeback, fans have begun to notice that other hit ’90s groups like H.O.T. and g.o.d. are beginning to show positive movement regarding their own comebacks as well.

Shinhwa made their official comeback by guesting on ‘Win Win‘ and were greeted by H.O.T.’s Tony An and Moon Hee Jun as special secret guests. The two revealed, “After hearing about Shinhwa’s comeback, the members began wondering when we would be planning our own comeback.”

Moon Hee Jun continued, “We’ve been consistently talking about our comeback about once every three years. Recently, we all got together and discussed it for real, but there’s a difficult obstacle in our way. If we solve that, we can make our comeback, but it’s difficult to solve…”

g.o.d.’s Son Hoyoung also talked about the group’s return while guesting on tvN‘s ‘People Inside‘ by stating, “The members are always saying, ‘Let’s be together.’ It’s just hard because everyone’s doing their own thing, but we are having positive discussions about it. We’re going to try our best to return to our fans with the best image possible.”

Minwoo opened up about the return of senior groups at Shinhwa’s 14th anniversary press conference by expressing, “Before we announced our comeback, I heard news of H.O.T.’s possible return so I was really looking forward to it. When I contacted them personally about it, they all said no, which was disappointing.”

Hopefully, both groups can work out their obstacles and make a grand return like Shinhwa’s in the near future.

YG Entertainment stocks down despite Big Bang & 2NE1′s success

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 04:09 AM PDT

On March 13th, YG Entertainment’s stock value dropped to 48,000 Won (approximately $42.63) from a stable value of around 50,000 Won.

At the time when YG Entertainment was performing well, analysts claimed that their stock price will soar up to around 80,000 Won. Breaking many people’s expectations, YG Entertainment’s stock was traded at around 109,000 Won (approximately $96.79) in January. However, there weren’t any increases after this time.

Not too long ago, YG Entertainment was the hottest blue chip in the stock market. YG Entertainment, the company of idol groups Big Bang and 2NE1, has been valued as one of the top entertainment companies along with SM Entertainment. As there were rumors about the company’s growth, the entertainment company started to become traded at a high value. However, during the past week, the stock price of YG started to drop continuously.

The main reason asserted by analysts is that Big Bang’s album activities have not been as good as before.

Big Bang has been YG Entertainment’s main pride and source of revenue. However, member Daesung was affiliated with a car accident last May and G-Dragon disappointed many fans with the marijuana incident in October. Although both members have been proven not guilty, it is true that both members brought a lot of disappointment and negative influence to the public. In addition, both members started their promotional activities in only four months without a long-enough time for repentance and self-discipline. Other Korean celebrities like MC Mong, who tried to avoid military service through teeth removal, has paused his celebrity activities for over a year. Also, actor Kim Sung Min, who also was affiliated with smoking marijuana, has paused his activities and has been repenting until now. Compared to these celebrities, G-Dragon and Daesung’s time for repentance seems to be too short.

After a severe damage to their image, Big Bang’s popularity seems to be declining as well. Even after a month has passed since their album release, Big Bang hasn’t been able to sell over 100,000 albums (currently around 60,000). However in 2011, Big Bang sold over 100,000 albums in only nine days.

Another reason for the drop in stock price seems to be YG Entertainment’s increased expenses used on the promotional activities of Big Bang. YG decided to utilize Naver’s website and TV advertisements to promote Big Bang’s album. According to some rumors, it cost around $3 billion won just to promote through Naver, one of Korea’s main portal websites.

Furthermore, another requirement for a singer to gain popularity is the relationship with broadcasting companies. However, YG Entertainment seems to have a bad relationship with Korea’s main broadcasting companies, except for SBS. For example, KBS even claimed that Big Bang and 2NE1 cannot access their company nor appear on their channel. Also, Big Bang was heavily criticized for their short time for repentance in KBS’s ‘Entertainment Relay‘. Their bad relationships with Korea’s main channels could have a bad effect on YG Entertainment’s upcoming idol groups or singers.

Currently, analysts believe that YG Entertainment stocks are overvalued due to the numerous factors hurting the company’s image. Big Bang is still only in the beginning phase of their promotional activities so many stockholders are hoping to see the entertainment company get back on track. It seems that although many fans have been supporting Big Bang’s comeback in the industry, the public is still skeptical about their short repentance and their bad influence to society as an ‘idol’ group, ultimately causing the stock prices to decline rapidly. Certainly, YG Entertainment has been going through hard times with increasing costs and efforts to rebuild their public image. One thing for certain though, is that the musicians of YG Entertainment are still top-notch and the company produces some the best K-Pop artists in the country. Hopefully soon enough, YG Entertainment will be able to gain back their lost value through the fantastic music they bring to the industry.

Who wore it best: Suzy, Park Ha Sun, or Seo Woo?

Posted: 15 Mar 2012 03:13 AM PDT

Celebrities wearing the same outfits–You’ve seen it before.

Recently, Miss A‘s Suzy, actress Park Ha Sun and Seo Woo were caught wearing the same one-piece dress on different occasions.

This particular dress is a product of J brand and one of its special features is the v-neck, white-black collar that reminds you of those Korean/Japanese school uniforms worn by young girls, a sailor outfit, or even a sailor moon costume.  Due to this cute design, the dress can make the wearer look younger and more innocent.  In addition, the outfit also contains a broad black belt that clinches at the waist, giving off the illusion of a slimmer waistline.

Suzy was last seen wearing this outfit during the broadcast of Mnet‘s ‘M! Countdown‘, while actress Park Ha Sun sported the dress during an episode of “High Kick 3“.  Lastly, Seo Woo wore the dress during a scene in SBS‘ weekend drama, “If Tomorrow Comes“.

One-piece dresses are perfect for the spring season due to their comfort and fresh look.  The three women certainly rocked the outfits well, but if you had to choose, who wore it best?
