If you take a look at the music charts today, it's rare to see a Top 10 that isn't filled with glossy American popstars who just want to dance on the floor/party rock/put their hands up/raise their glass (I could keep on going) so sometimes it's healthy to take a look at things from the other side of the world. Over in South Korea, China and Japan it is very rare for any of the artists we take for granted to dominate the charts considering these countries are each filled with their own pop culture. Cracking the east Asian market is the equivalent of British musicians trying to crack America – near on impossible. You may think 'What's the point? I've never heard of any of these people and the only ones listening to them are those crazy asian kids who stay on chatrooms all day' but with a higher company revenue rate from digital sales that the USA plus South Korea becoming a huge base for homegrown talent (currently the 11th biggest music market in the world and gaining fast) as well as interest from American producers, it won't be long before the Popstars of East Asia become the Popstars of the World.
K-Pop or Korean Pop as is its full name, is perhaps the biggest musical genre in the Asian markets and it's startling to see how pop music is made here not to mention how good it is. Largely girlbands and boybands, they're trained from a very young age and nurtured in terms of singing, style and dance so when they do hit the big time they're fully fledged triple threats (plus many of them can pop-rap quite convincingly too). The girls generally fit one of two moulds – girly or sexy (but not in a 'look-little-girls-i'm-a-hooker' kinda way) – whilst the guys tend to be highly androgynous (which definitely isn't in the USA or UK mainstream mindset when it comes to male representation) and all of the videos are extreme high-gloss affairs with dynamite dance routines which would have bands like The Saturdays or One Direction quivering in fear. Most try to break into the Japanese market and sing whole albums in Japanese as well as their native Korean plus the ability to sing in english now the Western markets are in their sights. Fan culture is a huge huge thing in K-Pop and has been for years before everyone over here cottoned on to it – no, Lady GaGa's Little Monsters weren't the first big fan group with their own identity you silly sausage. GaGa is in fact one of the few to crack this market because she gets it; what some here feel is OTT and attention-seeking is totally normal for fans of K-Pop. With that in mind, let me give you a head's up – here's three girlbands and two boybands big in K-Pop you could very well be hearing more of in the future:
Perhaps the biggest girlband in the whole of K-Pop, Girls' Generation say more is more. Consisting of nine (NINE?? Yes, that's basically The Saturdays plus Little Mix all on stage at the same time in synchronised dance) members, which I won't list because it'll take a decade and I'd just end up resorting to describing them by their hairstyles, Girls' Generation or SNSD as their fans call them have been in the business since 2007 and their oldest member is still only 23 meaning they have years ahead of them. You want accolades? Ok then. Their single Gee is the longest running number one single on KBS Music Bank (think Korean Top of the Pops) whilst also being named the best song of the whole entire bloomin' decade by Melon, Korea's biggest music site. They have also smashed Japan, having the best selling K-Pop album there ever, and have performed their first English speaking single The Boys on Late Show with David Letterman in the USA. The Boys was produced by Teddy Riley who's previously worked with Michael Jackson, Usher and early 90′s hip-hop group Blackstreet proving influencial members of the American music industry are sitting up and taking notice. Now the group is signed globally to Interscope in the USA and Polydor France amongst others. The Boys is much more contemporary for the band and you can tell they're adapting for the Western market but they have an extremely catchy back catalogue: Gee, their biggest hit, is hand-clapping super pop at its best, Run Devil Run is squelching beat fierceness (with a video that puts the Pussycat Dolls to shame) and Oh! sounds like something off the mega drive Sonic games. They're older, wiser and and ready to roll – Incoming SNSD.
Let's go from the most popular girlband to perhaps the most popular boyband – BIGBANG (they love capitalisation in K-Pop). If they're not the most popular they certainly have the most hardcore fanbase, known as the VIPS, who helped vote them into the position of Best Worldwide Act at last year's MTV Europe Video Music Awards fending off competition from that little-known performer Britney Spears (and we know how crazy her fans can be – yes i'm looking at you Chris Crocker). Like Girls' Generation, they've experienced a change of style in recent years with their current incarnation (seen in the video for Fantastic Baby below) coming across like an anime punk version of Backstreet Boys' Backstreet's Back video with a whole lot of studs, coloured hair and bare chests. All five BIGBANG members have had successful solo careers on the side (each has had at least one number one single or album in South Korea) before recently coming back together with this new vision proving you can take a break successfully (Girls Aloud take note). Their most recent EP release Alive was the first K-Pop album sung in Korean to hit the Billboard 200 Albums chart recently as sees the guys try everything from the like-LMFAO-but-less-annoying Fantastic Baby to hip-hop inflected Bad Boy to some stood-on-a-rooftop boyband ballad-ness on Blue. If you're looking for something a bit more aligned with chart music of the moment have a gander at Tonight which could have been any of the big electro dance pop hits of last year only sang in Korean. Each of the members have their own strengths (member G-Dragon being an extremely accomplished producer/songwriter always helps) which means they can adapt chameleon like to whatever genre they want – a bonus if they want to crack the big western charts.
Now these girls have just released their fourth EP (full length albums are few and far between in K-Pop) coinciding with new single/video campaign Volume Up which body-pops whole heartedly into the current trend for saxophone backlines as seen used by Katy Perry (T.G.I.F), Lady GaGa (The Edge of Glory) and Alexandra Stan (Mr Saxobeat) and is perhaps the most accessible K-Pop i've heard since I started listening around. The video is a super slick but equally sexy affair (perhaps even racy for K-Pop girlbands what with all the girl-on-girl grinding going on), I am in love with the bang on-trend gilded baroque blue/orange/gold outfits – major style points plus they're an extremely young band (youngest member So Hyun is just 17) spawning at a time where K-Pop is on the verge of going global so to me this all spells exciting. The fact they're consistently in the Korean Top 10 as well as last year winning the award for Kpop New Artist at the Billboard Japan Music Awards only creates a sense of expectation around this girlband. HyunA seems to be taking the lead here and definitely has a strong presence (you'll know which one I mean when you see the video), not to mention a previous solo EP (which is well worth a look if only for the stupidly infectious dubstep-influenced Bubble Pop). Previous songs aren't as good as Volume Up in my opinion but the rock-tinged Ready Go and Mirror Mirror are pre-cursors to their potential and beyond and I can't wait to see where they go next.
If you're looking for a more conventional boyband MBLAQ fit the brief, being relatively new on the scene like 4MINUTE. Mentored by K-Pop legend Rain (who you may have seen in the film Ninja Assassin, but probably not), this team of five guys are making waves in K-Pop and have been particularly successful in the Japanese market with their singles releases. Songs to look up include Mona Lisa, a latin tinged uptempo with some interesting man-skirt outfits in the video, the extremely 90′s sounding ballad Scribble and recent comeback single It's War which features a startling 5 minute video involving assassins, choreographed fight scenes and an actual cinematic storyline unseen in most pop music videos these days. Yeah sure it'd never get pass our TV censors what with the blood and death and that but it's certainly interesting to watch. The song itself is a marching drum, piano filled, strings laden affair which sounds like a much grander version of Blue's I Can from last year. They're also regular guests on the Asian Reality TV show circuit (not as much a statement of terribleness that it would be if attributed to a UK or American act) and are continually providing music for TV and film soundtracks. With a toughening up of image and a couple of hits on Billboard's new K-Pop Chart in the USA under their belt (the fact they have a chart dedicated to it suggests how much its grown in the public consciousness), MBLAQ seem to be going from strength to strength.
Last but definitely not least, the multi-award winning 2NE1 are the hot ticket right now in K-Pop. A blend of all the different shades of girlband – they're girly cute, hip-hop tough and R&B sassy all in the space of the same video – these four girls have already had ten number ones in the Korean charts in the space of the last three years and are on the cusp of an American breakthrough under Will.I.Am's management and production which could see them be the first major breakthrough for K-Pop. In my eyes that partnership makes total sense as the girls' delivery, especially in spoken-rap-esque sections, sounds incredibly similar to the Black Eyed Peas and Fergie's solo stuff. Scream (the most recent single in Japan) flits from Hi-NRG pop pre-choruses to rap sections and an extremely good early Destiny's Child-lite groove breakdown, I Am The Best is femme-pop empowerment at its best which nabs the 'Woo Yeah' drum line from Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock's It Takes Two (which BEP sampled for Rock That Body) and Can't Nobody is auto-tune squizzey beats with a fierce attitude and a infectious refrain. Style is a huge thing for 2NE1; top-end fashion designer Jeremy Scott is good friends with the band and his clothes can frequently be seen in their music videos (he works extensively in the realm of Pop Art surreal kookiness masterminding the infamous air steward PVC dress for Britney Spears – Toxic as well as outfits for Katy Perry, Lady GaGa and M.I.A.). Literally on the brink of releasing their first English-speaking single, aptly entitled Take The World On according to industry insiders, 2NE1 have major support behind them so it may not be long before K-Pop will be wanting them back before they get totally adopted into the USA or UK music scenes.

It's been less than three months since her debut but singer Ailee is already taking the Korean entertainment scene by storm with the commanding stage performance of a veteran entertainer. Ailee is a Korean-American artist who debuted in February with her single "Heaven."
The 23-year-old singer has appeared on KBS2's reality TV show "Immortal Song 2," dazzling viewers with her talented voice while rubbing shoulders on stage with seasoned performers.
Her playfulness backstage vanishes as soon as she appears in the floodlights. "For some reason, I turn into a different person when I get on stage," Ailee said. "I don't get stage fright. For me, it's fun."
Ailee became a star on YouTube before she debuted on Korean TV. Around 10 clips of her singing for her own entertainment that she uploaded on the video-sharing website registered a total of 10 million visits. That feat led to her appearing in a talent contest on NBC's "Maury Show" in 2008, where she finished in second place.
"People told me I was a good singer, so I became curious to find out just how good and decided to upload the clips for fun," Ailee said. "I posted several more clips after I received a lot of messages asking me to do so."
She says an American music producer approached her about a record deal, but she turned down the offer. "My parents and grandparents, who went to the U.S. from Korea, always told me that I am Korean and made me speak Korean at home," Ailee said. "I am Korean, so I naturally wanted to go to Korea to sing… I'm big fan of K-pop so I formed a band with other Korean-Americans and we performed here and there."
She took time out from her university studies and came to the country in 2010 to become a singer. "I'm still learning about Korea and how to express myself through my music here in a way people can fully relate to, but I am practicing hard and hope to move others through my singing," Ailee said.

The fresh, cheerful, and cute girl group Girl's Day(Sojin, Yura, Jihae, Minah, Hyeri) has come back to us with the second mini album 'Everyday II' after 8 months of hiatus.
Girl's Day, who held the showcase on the 18th to inform us of their successful comeback, is meeting the public through various music shows, stepping forward from their previous image as young girls by giving off their mature charms.
Furthermore, Girl's Day is planning to hold their second concert in Japan in upcoming May, in addition that they are expanding their range of individual activities as actresses. They promised us to show their improvement in the future.
Adding 'sexy' to 'cutesy', "In fact we felt a bit burdened"
'Oh! My God', the title song of Girl's Day's second album 'Everyday II', is a song that tries to deliver a new change to their cheerful image by putting a sexy feel in it.
In regard to this, Minah said, "We were nervous and also excited because it's a comeback after 8 months," and introduced us the the concept of the album, "We didn't put any extra effort to look more sexy, it's rather that we got the sexy image naturally as time went by."
She continued, "In fact, we felt burdened(because we're more known for our cute image)," confessing her feeling of being burdened about the change to their image.
However, they revealed that they still have many charms to show us, and promised that they will show us how they keep improving and changing themselves.
On this matter, Hyeri, who is the maknae and the only high school student in Girl's Day, said and brought us laughter, "Each member has a lot of their own charms so we're thinking of showing the matured sexy side of Girl's Day, which is completely different from we had ever before, but since I'm still a minor, I think it will be only viable after I become an adult."
◇ The splendid showcase, and the behind-the-scenes stories
Back on the 18th, Girl's Day held the showcase at CGV in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul, to celebrate the release of their mini album and it garnered much interest.
In particular, Sojin gained much attention at the showcase, saying, "The self-composed song 'Telepathy' in this album is meant to be my own defiance towards the songs I usually listen to."
On the comment of her, she made a clarification, "It didn't actually mean to be a defiance towards the music itself. Personally I was in a long slump regarding the music, so in order to overcome it, I challenged myself to compose a song."
Hyeri, who got a funny yet sad nickname called "Kill Heel Syndrome" when she was spotted while standing with the back of her heels up in air in bare feet, looked embarrassed to hear it and explained, "It wasn't on purpose. Since I'm in a girl group, I guess I just did my usual behavior without me realizing it."
Jihae said about her personal talent that showcased her powerful rapping skills in English, "There wasn't any special meaning or messsage in doing that. I like Nicki Minaj and that's why I sang it," and on hearing her remark, Minah jokingly said and evoked some laughter, "Isn't that because you don't understand the English lyrics?"
Meanwhile, Minah showed much interest in going on a date at the showcase and officially requested, surprising everyone around there, "Dear CEO, please allow me (to date)".
Minah added, "Now that I'm 20 and I've become an adult, honestly I'm much interested in dating," and confessed, "Moreover, since I haven't had a date with a guy, I have a lot of expectation from it, hoping it to be like a fairytale".
Hyeri also revealed her thought, "Actually I'm much interested in it too, but I'm the maknae and a minor so I don't open up about it".
Promoting songs along with advancing to acting, "Busy and busy"
On the upcoming 28th, Hyeri will be playing her role in SBS weekend drama 'Tasty Life' as Jung Mi Hyun, Im Chae Moo's youngest daughter in the drama.
As an actress who takes her first step in the acting career, Hyeri shared her impression, "At first I was a bit scared, but many other actors helped me with acting so I was able to finish my scenes without any problem," and then added, "However, that gave me a thought that the filming of a drama is a hard job and I think I can't show my scenes to the other members (due to my embarrassment)".
Hyeri complimented Minah, who has already debuted in MBN sitcom 'Vampire Idol' and labeled her as acting-dol, expressing her envy for Minah, "I saw her acting and thought she was so good. Her role fit her well in the sitcom".
Besides, Yura, who has started her career as an actress with the Chinese drama 'Secret Angel' starring Jang Woo Hyuk and Kim So Eun, showed her anticipation, "Currently 5 episodes of the drama were aired. I'm much interested in acting and I'm glad I'm starred in a good drama like this. I hope (this opportunity) will lead me to enter the Chinese drama industry".
◇ 2nd anniversary since their debut, "We're thinking of releasing a regular album within this year"
This year Girl's Day will be having their 2nd anniversary, and in celebration for the anniversary they're currently thinking of releasing their first ever full-length album.
Sojin said and raised our expectation, "I hear that the agency is also considering releasing the full-length album for the celebration of our 2nd anniversary. Maybe if the production of the album is finalized, then it might be released within this year".
And she continued and got a big cheer from the other members, promising us to come with another self-composed song for the next album, "In this album, I had to compose a cute song so that it fits into the overall atmosphere of the album, but the next time I'll compose a song with a cool style."
In response to the question of who their role models are, Girl's Day chose 'Shinhwa' without hesitation, "We'd like to remain unchanged as long as they did for over 10 years. As idols, and as our seniors, we respect them and they look so great. Shinhwa sunbaenim jjang," confirming their determination to be the long lasting idols who receive love from people for a long time.

Girls' Generation's Yoona and Yuri are going head to head in dramas, and it has been revealed that they are burdened by the comparison of their acting skills.
On April 27th, Yoona met with reporters in Sangsudong where KBS 2TV's "Love Rain" was filming. She gave her honest opinion on the citizens' thoughts. Yoona was asked about the comparison between her and Yuri's acting skills. She replied, "Our worries are different. It's Yuri's first time acting while it is time for me to strengthen my path as an actress", and "I was surprised when I first saw Yuri acting. It was much better than my first time".
Also, she explained the change in her acting, saying, "It's been two years since I last acted, and during the two years, I feel like I matured a lot. While I'm reading the script, my field of vision on dramas becomes wider. If I looked at only my character before, now I think about the drama in general and then analyze my character."
When asked about Girls' Generation members' reactions when they watched "Love Rain", Yoona replied, "They all said they liked that I came out very pretty. They were especially surprised at the kiss scene."
Sooyoung was selected as the member who monitors her the best. Yoona said, "Sooyoung unnie personally recorded my Japanese lines. I always listened to it right before I started acting, and from time to time, I was surpised because Sooyoung's tone of voice popped out in my lines."

Shortly after being released, Girls' Generation – TTS's "Twinkle" gained an all-kill on Korean music charts, while the mini-album ranked in various positions on iTunes charts across the globe.
The song shot to #1 on MelOn, Bugs, Olleh, Soribada, Mnet, Daum and Naver mere hours after the release, but perhaps even more exciting is the reaction to the worldwide album release. "Twinkle" not only charted highly in South Korea, but in various countries around the world on the iTunes store. The mini-album rose to #2 on the iTunes Pop album chart in the US store, and peaked at #4 in the overall album chart, just behind world-renowned and 6-time Grammy award winning artist Adele and her album "21″, which won Album of the Year in early 2012. Girls' Generation set yet another record as the highest ranking Korean artist on the iTunes album charts.
Alongside their success in the US Chart, Girls' Generation – TTS charted highly in many more countries. "Twinkle" rose to #10 on iTunes Mexico's pop album chart, #18 in Spain, #32 in Ireland, #26 in the Netherlands, #22 in the UK, and charted at various positions on the Top Albums chart, including #11 in Sweden, #2 in Japan, #6 in Brazil, #60 in the UK, #15 in Finland, #36 in France, #56 in Italy, #5 in Canada, #4 in Australia, #8 in New Zealand, and even #1 in Bulgaria, showing just how just how global the appeal of Girls' Generation has become.

Son Ga In
The Reversal Life of The Goddess
The chic Ga In is actually an independant lady who has long been living alone. Surprisingly different from being the not so active girl in the program "We Got Married", it's a completely different situation in her own home!
The Loneliness of Living Alone
Always appearing so chic, Ga In gives off the impression that she would be a really indepedant woman. Maybe we can see her as the modern woman of this generation. Ga In has started living alone since about 2 years ago. But she will probably deny it if we were to say that she is a person who is really suitable for living alone. "Living alone is good for girls with boyfriends or those girls who love to go out and have fun. But for me, it's just giving me even more time to feel lonely" (*laughs).
"Even though I'm rather used to playing alone since young and having fun entertaining myself, but still living alone is really different from playing alone. But if you were to tell me not to live alone now, I'll probably won't do it either, haha."
Surprisingly Good Living Alone
Fans would probably be interested to know the things Ga In would do in her house when living alone. But each time celebrities were asked this question, they seem to think that they are the same just like everyone else. And of course, Ga In feels this way too.
"I'll just do whatever I can alone, like cleaning chores. Normal people clean their homes once every few days right, but that don't work for me. I won't allow my home to be messy. I'll clean it up the moment I see places which are dirty. My house has never been dirty ever since I started living alone, it's really the truth! And I've picked all the furniture in my house myself and some were even assembled by me, so I couldn't bare to see them
being dirtied. And because I did art when I was young, my house is actually pretty not bad!
The Mature Kind of Female Celebrity
Because of the effects of her strong eye makeup and stage outfits, Ga In gives off the feeling that she would be under the category of the mature, sexy celebrities. But it is unexpected that Ga In has actually been troubled over her more mature looks since young.
"It's true, I used to be really troubled over my more mature looks! I used to wrote about this problem everyday in my diary and I'm still keeping the diary I started when I was in elementary school. I even took it out and read it frequently when I was in high school, but not now. I've probably grown tired of it already." (*laughs) "Of course I wrote all sorts of other problems in the diary too, seems like I really did think too much when I was young, haha. But each time I look back to when I was young, I'll still feel that my younger self is really adorable."
