K-Pop to Become Big in the UK?

Posted: 01 Apr 2012 08:25 AM PDT

The South Korean mix of electropop, rock, R&B, hip-hop, pop and dance is set to make an impact in the UK, originally stemming from the popularity of Seo Taiji + Boys.

Seo Taiji started his career back in the 1990's after dropping out of High School.  He is often known as the "President of culture" after first introducing a mixture of elements to the United States. Although Taiji now works solo, at the age of 40 he often still performs with other musicians.

K-pop has been successful in many countries already, including Japan, Vietnam, China, Taiwan, Thailand the USA and Sweden. S.M Entertainments biggest artist BoA has sold over 24 million albums so far, and she has also toured in the US. The beauty of acts such as BoA and Girls Generation (a 9 piece electropop group) is that they learn Japanese before they go there and often release a Japanese version of their singles. They put a lot of dedication in and this pays off as they have managed to break the Japanese market. Another successful act is Rain (Jeong Ji Hoon) who has been compared to Justin Timberlake. He is a singer and also acts and dances and is extremely well known in Asian countries. In Time Magazine, back in 2006 he was named as one of the 100 Most Influential People.

What is the general appeal of K-pop?

K-pop seems to produce a sense of comrade-ship and a great bond particularly amongst its young fans (average age between 15 and 20 years old). It has even been described as a religion! The groups have been credited for genuinely caring about their fans in a way that Westernized bands don't seem on a par with. It is entertaining with good looking young men and women that can sing and dance professionally. It is a kind of sanctuary for its fans and its originality makes music fun and interesting.

As with other types of popular music, there is a variety of K-pop merchandise available, mostly over the internet. This merchandise ranges from musical memorabilia to K-pop motorbikes. If you really get hooked on buying major K-pop products to the scale of a motorbike you might want to think about  the different options of funding this, which may involve checking out balance transfer offers or comparing the bank's latest promotions with regards to loans and overdrafts. The availability of K-pop products in the UK is growing along with the popularity of K-pop.

Is K-pop still as popular in its native South Korea?
K- pop is so popular in South Korea that they have their own reality show called 'Survival Audition K-pop star'. The first auditions have taken place and were held in the US, Brazil, China and Europe. These were followed by the next three stages. The ultimate final winner is to be crowned after a live competition held between March 4 and April 29th 2012. The judges that are hoping to put the finalists on the road to stardom are Yang Hyun-suk, founder of YG Entertainment and former member of Seo Taiji & Boys, Park Jin-young, who is also singer/songwriter of JYP Entertainment and BoA (famous female singer from SM Entertainment). The winner is to debut with a cash prize of three hundred million won (approximately £150,000) with the runner- up prize consisting of two vehicles. This will serve to seal the popularity of K-pop in South Korea.

Why is it becoming popular in the UK?
Facebook and Twitter have increased the popularity of K-pop in the UK with fans of K-pop using it to their advantage by being the first to find out about forthcoming events.   In fact it is becoming so popular in the UK that there is no need to advertise. Proof of its increasing popularity in the UK was at the Mayor's Thames Festival last September when over 100,000 teenagers watched music videos together and participated in K-pop related competitions. The appeal to Westerners is the combination of the dynamic confidence of the bands along with the melodic songs that are easy to sing along to. Although it is just in its infancy in the UK, there is always room for great musical talent

Group Big Bang put on an amazing show.

For SBS Inkigayo on the 1st, Big Bang performed "Bad Boy" and "Fantastic Baby."

Then they performed "Fantastic Baby," where the members wore red, green, white, blue, and black. TOP's mint hair and pink eyebrows drew attention as well.

The performance got a lot of attention for its fun and energetic beat along with the unique stage clothes.

"Fantastic Baby" is the fastest and strongest song from Big Bangs 5th mini album and it had the greatest reaction from the audience at Big Bang's world tour.

Other artists who performed at Inkigayo are Bohemian, C-Real, X-Cross, Tao & Haha, Nine Muses, BtoB, Spica, Ailee, Nuest, Bilasa, Lyn, K. Will, Miss A, 2AM, ShinEE, and CN Blue.

[News] Chicago Responds to SHINee's Sherlock

Chicago Responds to SHINee's Sherlock
By Kristy M
Chicago Correspondent

SM Entertainment's boy band SHINee made their comeback March of 2012 with the hit album entitled "Sherlock." The project topped iTunes and various music charts with its duo title track ("Clue" and "Note") release. The group's fans, which are endearingly called ShaWols, anticipated their return since October of 2010.

The week of March 11, 2012, SHINee released their artistic and sexy comeback images. The sexy "Sherlock" concept was shocking to many ShaWols who are use to the five young men's cute boy-next-door concepts. Chicago ShaWols had mix emotions when it came to SHINee's sexy hippie teaser photos and their British inspired music video.

What are some of the opinions ShaWols in Chicago have about "Sherlock"? I asked fans from the "Bring SM Town to Chicago" group what they felt about SHINee's comeback and here are some excerpts from their quotes.

"I was a bit scared for their comeback when the teaser photos came out. I think, along with the Shawols, we were a bit nervous about SHINee's comeback because it has been over a year since they have done anything in Korea. I'm happy about what they have done.
I'm already excited for the 3rd full album," states Lauren.

"I was very confused when I saw the teasers. I assumed they were going for a sexy comeback, since that was something they have never done before. When the music teaser came out, I felt that 'Sherlock' reminded me a lot of Michael Jackson (a blend between 'Jam', 'Smooth Criminal', 'Remember the Time', and 'Scream'). So, being a big fan of MJ, I'm very pleased with what I've seen and heard. The dance was very powerful and it is one of my favorite dances so far," Sara remarked.

Melinda shared the following, "I'm happy SHINee made a comeback. The choreography in their new music video is so cool, its like unfolding a fan. I've heard people say they look hippie-like and I kind of agree. It's not a bad thing they can rock any look."

Jasmine expressed, "The teaser photos shocked me because their were shirtless, but I couldn't help being excited for their comeback. When I saw the choreography and heard the song, they really improved since their debut. The comeback stages blew my mind! They came back stronger and the MR removed videos just showed how much they have improved vocally. I'm really happy to have my SHINee Oppas back."

Jay, who is not a ShaWol, commended the group on their amazing performance, I am not a ShaWol, but I thought that the song and dance were amazing. SHINee always delivers with their dances. They did not disappoint."

Andrea was uncomfortable with the teaser images, but she is a fan of their song, "I honestly thought the concept would be a detective like theme. I was very confused because everyone was half naked. The picture concepts were completely different from the actual music video itself. The music video is really great, but the mystery was a bit confusing. I find myself doing the Sherlock walk every time I hear 'I'm so curious, yeah!'"

Jenny compared "Sherlock" to Super Junior's 2011 "Mr. Simple" comeback with the teaser images that didn't help describe the actual song. Nonetheless, they are pleased with the outcome and think the group has the possibly of sweeping award shows, "The teaser photos kind of threw me off. I didn't like it. However, I love the song and the dance. I like Sherlock comeback more than their previous one.The only thing I was a little sad about was that Onew didn't get many lines in 'Sherlock'. It is amazing how much SHINee changed They have become one of the best K-pop groups out there. I'm sure they are going to win many awards with this comeback."

Cassandra thought the teaser pictures were colorful, but was still in a state of shock over the images. Despite their opinion of the images, they still think the band is living up to the Sherlock theme,"I was shocked, no shocked doesnt even describe how I felt. However, they performed and released their music video and I thought that it wasn't as near as colorful as their teaser, but they still rocked the 'Sherlock' feel."

Dedicated ShaWol Nicole had this to say about the new project,"I'm a huge SHINee Shawol and the months waiting for this was agony. When i finally heard the songs, I definitely saw the SHINee style. One of the things that I didnt like as much was the hippie look they had for the pictures and Taemin's long hair. He looked good with the long hair in' Lucifer', but this one isn't really working out for him. Nonetheless, he is my all time bias and favorite K-pop singer and dancer. I was really excited seeing the Sherlock music video. The dance looks like soo much fun so I'm learning the steps right now. I hope in the near future they have another concert tour SHINee world tour around the world and I'll do anything for them to come to Chicago! That would be an expeirence that I would NEVER forget."

SHINee debuted in May of 2008 with their hit single "Replay". They continued to promote their first album with promotions for "Love Like Oxygen" and "Amigo". "Julliete" was the follow-up in the summer of 2009 with the group solidifying themselves as male fashionistas with their bright pastel stage ensembles. SHINee released their third mini album "Ring Ding Dong" and wrapped up promotions for the project with "Jojo" in the latter half of 2009. In the summer 2010, they returned with "Lucifer" and sparked a controversial debate over the title of the album. They spent 2011 in Japan with their official debut promotions. SHINee released their first Japanese album titled "SHINee: The First" in December of 2011.

[News] ‘How would you rate SHINee’s live performance?’

Posted: 01 Apr 2012 04:46 AM PDT

SHINee, who recently made a comeback with its new mini-album Sherlock, visited the live broadcast of Mnet's Wide Entertainment News that was held in the glass-wall open studio of the CJ E&M building in Sangam-dong. Many fans were lining up in front of the open studio more than an hour before the broadcast due to the fact that they could watch the members from a close distance.

During the live broadcast, enews was able to capture the candid personalities of SHINee, which weren't easily seen before on camera. SHINee's quick thinking and wit filled up the studio and confirmed their billing as one of the optimum combination of idol group members.

SHINee is 'boisterous' even when they don't appear on screen.

SHINee greeted the audience with "We are shiny SHINee!" and consistently showed their energy throughout the broadcast. They revealed their bright spirits and chatted and joked with one another even during the narration of the broadcast.

As their headline-grabbing teaser pictures that exposed their upper bodies appeared on screen, the members showed their excitement and shrieked, "[That] looks great," "It's coming, it's coming," and "Oh my…" Furthermore, when last week's M Countdown behind-the-scenes footage was shown, the members yelled out the names of the manager and staff members who appeared on the screen, and their behavior seemed quite different from other groups who would usually just sit quietly and watch.

When the crew yelled "Going live in five.." to signal the airing of the broadcast, the SHINee members raised their hands and joined in on the countdown while looking towards the crowd outside the glass wall.

Shiny SHINee? Their cunning spirit was also evident during the broadcast.

Always moving the hearts of nuna fans with their refreshing image, the members didn't hesitate to laugh at their own expense on Wide Entertainment News.

During the Talk Bingo segment, MC Yi Sol Ji and Hong Jong Hyun showed them the grand prize, which turned out to be a cell phone from a famous brand. The members showed their excitement and said, "Wow, that's expensive," and "That's a doctor's cell phone, a doctor's cell phone." Then, when asked to do the 'point dance,' they obliged and showed their positive image by asking, "What would you like to see next?"

Noticing that they were running out of time, the SHINee members said, "Since we don't have a lot of time left, we're going to answer the three Bingo questions all at once," and their rapid-fire response, reminiscent of a rap battle, drew the audience's laughter.

One of the question asked if Jonghyun was addicted to chatting - and of course, Jonghyun was the only one out of the group to say that he was not addicted. Instead of arguing, he quickly changed his stance to complete the bingo and said, "That's right! That's right! I am an addict. I love chatting. Do you want to follow me?"

SHINee's outstanding ability to cope with a accident on the set.

That day, there was also a startling accident on the set of Wide Entertainment News that surprised the MCs, production crew and fans. The big Bingo board lost its balance and fell over.

However, instead of being frightened, SHINee members immediately got up and righted the Bingo board, even putting the questions back into their rightful places and calmly sat down to continue their conversation. Then, they added, "These kind of things are the beauty of live broadcasts," and "We're alive, everyone."

Had SHINee been a less talented group, that accident could have led to a much bigger broadcast disaster. Fortunately, SHINee was able to showcase their quick thinking and turned the accident it into an interesting story. Soon afterwards, Onew didn't spare his body and successfully smashed a gourd.

In the end, SHINee was able to complete the Bingo board with everyone's help and Jonghyun claimed the first prize after winning a
rock-paper-scissor battle. The members then moved to the M Countdown stage for their comeback performance, where they bested 2AM and CN Blue after only a week since their comeback.
