Hallyu Wave expected to cool down in the next four years, KoreaTimes reports

Posted: 20 May 2012 08:25 AM PDT

In contrast to the multitude of Korean and international articles praising the Hallyu wave’s rapid international spread and predicting its future growth, a new KoreaTimes article suggests that the viral nature of this success may not last as long as some expect.

Six out of 10 foreigners believe the recent fad for Korean culture ― K-pop, movies and TV dramas and soap operas ― will decline over the next few years,” the report reveals. A survey by Korea’s Ministry of Culture Sports and Tourism and the Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange (KOFICE) revealed that 60% of 3,600 people in nine countries doubt that the Hallyu wave will see lasting international success.

The main reason foreigners doubted hallyu's continued success is because they are ‘tired of standardized content,’” the article explained, attesting that 20.5% of respondents voted for this reason.

Hypersexual dancing, lyrics and clothing are common among K-pop "idols," and teen singers,” the report points out. “Korean drama series repeatedly revisit topics such as adulterous affairs, revenge and secrets surrounding the birth or identity of characters, making it difficult to move increasingly desensitized audiences.”

Experts believe that Korea must ‘sell its unique story’ in order to win over other countries by integrating the nation’s traditions into Korean pop culture.

As one representative from the culture ministry said, "Content that isn't original and diverse will not survive in the market. It is essential to diversify the stories in the media … We also need to encourage financial investment in media, because you can't create a masterpiece with just a great story and an idea."

The report can be read in its entirety at KoreaTimes here.

This skepticism of the Hallyu wave comes as a shock to many Korean and international K-pop fans, many of whom are currently “drunk on the international Korean culture craze”. What are your predictions for the future of the Hallyu wave? We’d like to hear your reasoning in the comments section below!

Which Shinhwa member won first place for having the worst speaking skills?

Posted: 20 May 2012 06:45 AM PDT

The May 19th broadcast of jTBC‘s ‘Shinhwa Broadcast‘ featured the episode ‘Speech Channel – The God of Words’, in which the members of Shinhwa compete against each other in speech challenges to win the title as the “God of Words”.

Prior to starting the competition, the producer of ‘Shinhwa Broadcast’ created a seating chart ranking the Shinhwa members from 1st place to 6th place. The members tried to figure out what the ranking was based on considering that Andy was in first place, Hyesung in second, Dongwan in third, Eric in fourth, Junjin in fifth, and Minwoo in last place.

Subsequently, the producer revealed that the ranking was based on the title, ‘The Member Who Can’t Speak’. Andy looked pestered upon realizing that he won first place for being the worst speaker.

Minwoo read aloud the producer’s explanation for each member’s ranking, sharing, ”Andy [for first place] — he tries really hard to talk, but I can’t understand what he’s talking about. He talks to himself and then laughs to himself.“ Correspondingly, clips of Andy giving a nonsense answer during an interview and talking and laughing to himself in his car were played to prove the producer’s point.

Next, Minwoo continued, “Hyesung — he’s better than Andy. Dongwan — he is known as the wit guy, however, Eric seems to hate his wit. Eric — he talks well to the Shinhwa members and Gomdori (his dog) but he can’t talk to other people. Junjin — he’s funny and has good timing, but he keeps trying to copy Eric. Minwoo — he is funny and speaks surprisingly well. It was seriously a surprise. A surprise…

ZE:A’s Kwanghee is now a jungle person?

Posted: 19 May 2012 11:22 PM PDT

ZE:A‘s Kwanghee has been called out yet again for his odd 4D ways.

Member Hyunsik tweeted on May 19th, “Even when told we’re taking a picture, the jungle person has no interest,” referring to Kwanghee’s appearances on the survival reality program ‘Laws of the Jungle 2‘. In the photo, it really does appear as if Kwanghee was the only member with no interest in posing. Maybe the star is taking a slightly longer time to adjust to the life of an idol after toughing it in the wilderness?

The 4D idol seems to have later paid attention as Hyunsik updated, “Even if he has no idea, the jungle person still follows us with common sense,” and posted the more successful photo below.

Fans commented, “Has Kwanghee now been classified as a jungle man?” “Why do I feel so sorry for Kwanghee,” and “It seems that Kwanghee left his head in the jungle.”

Still cuts of CNBLUE’s Jonghyun in ‘Gentlemen’s Class’ released

Posted: 19 May 2012 11:03 PM PDT

SBS‘s upcoming weekend drama ‘Gentlemen’s Class‘ has released on scene cuts of CNBLUE‘s Jonghyun!

Jonghyun will be playing the role of Collin, a Korean-American who grew up in Japan and holds a pivotal secret to the plot. His first scene took place at a club in Itaewon last month where he was recorded bumping into co-star Kim Ha Neul while drinking at the bar alone. Kim Ha Neul immediately recognizes him and tries to strike up a conversation, to which Jonghyun replies with a heart stopping smile.

Jonghyun was described to have been a gentleman on the set, stopping to personally greet each staff member while preparing for his scenes with thorough script readings. He was also spotted in lengthy conversations with PD Shin Woo Chul over the development of his character and observing the scenes of his senior co-stars.

The PD didn’t spare his praise, commenting, “Despite it being his first filming, he did fantastically.”

The drama’s production company stated, “Through the drama, Jonghyun will be playing a character of innocent nature who holds an unfortunate secret close to his heart. He’ll be showing a different side to him as an actor in contrast to the charisma he exudes on stage as a singer.”
