Singer Huh Gak revealed he was 5’4″ (163cm) tall during an interview with fellow contestant Ailee on ‘Immortal Song 2‘.

Ailee asked Huh Gak, “Is there anything you want to know about me by any chance?” He answered jokingly, “There’s nothing I’m curious about. The internet tells me everything. I’ve already looked you up. Age, legal name, agency, etc., I know everything. I’m not curious.”

He went on, “Do you want to know anything about me?” She replied by asking, “How tall are you, Huh Gak?”

Huh Gak seemed taken aback by the bold question as he responded, “Ailee, why are you doing this to me? I’m 5’4″ (163cm).” Ailee was surprised by his height, responding, “Really? I’m 163cm,” and measuring her height against his.

After the two compared how tall they were while barefoot, they high-fived each other after finding out they were basically the same height.

Actor Joo Sang Wook admits to watching SISTAR’s “Alone” over 600 times

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 04:15 AM PDT

Actor Joo Sang Wook has reportedly mastered the choreography for SISTAR‘s “Alone“.

Joo Sang Wook guested on June 9th’s ‘Invincible Youth 2‘ and made mugwort rice cakes with the G6 members. He teamed up with SISTAR’s Bora, Jewelry‘s Yewon, and Boom to make one of the ingredients, soybean flour.

While they were waiting for the beans to roast, Bora performed a “wave dance” for the actor and commented after, “I showed you a wave so oppa should show one too.” Joo Sang Wook is reported to have gotten up immediately to do his own wave dance, only to make the others laugh because of his stiff moves.

The SISTAR member then asked, “Do you know our song ‘Alone’?” to which he replied, “Not even joking. I’ve watched it over 600 times.” Bora ended up teaching him the “Alone” dance, and along with Boom and Yewon, they pulled off the dance as a group. Joo Sang Wook apparently followed along pretty well.

In related news, Joo Sang Wook chose T-ara‘s Hyomin as his ideal girl from the variety series.

[Spoilers] Movie Review: ‘As One’ (‘Korea’)

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 03:35 AM PDT

Actress Ha Ji Won‘s second North-South Korea reunification themed work of the year, ‘As One‘ (Korean title: ‘Korea‘) has opened in select theaters across North America. On June 5, the actress visited the CGV Cinemas in Los Angeles to promote the film.

> Plot synopsis

‘As One’ recounts the true story of the first unified Korean sports team since the nation split following the Korean War. As the 41st World Table Tennis Championships approached in 1991, politicians in North and South Korea decided to form one unified team, Team Korea. ‘As One’ follows the North and South Korean teams from their first encounters with one another, through their training, their big game, and their final goodbyes.

Ha Ji Won (‘The King 2 Hearts’) stars as the South Korean ping pong star Hyun Jung Hwa. Bae Doo Na (‘The Host’) plays her rival, North Korea’s Rhee Boon Hee. The North and South Korean coaches were played by Kim Eung Soo (‘The Moon that Embraces the Sun’) and Park Chul Min (‘Beethoven Virus’) respectively. Other notable actors in the cast include Lee Jong Suk (‘High Kick 3′), Choi Yun Young, and Han Ye Ri.

> My opinion (Note: This reflects the opinions of the author, and not necessarily those of allkpop.)

Before I got a chance to watch the film, I watched the trailer on multiple occasions, but it never appealed to me. All I thought was, “Ping pong movie? No thank you.” The topic of North-South Korea reunification was something that I was rather apathetic about as well. When I watched the film,  I was definitely caught by surprise. I really enjoyed this film, and it gave me a new perspective on the issues regarding North and South Korean relations.

First off, this movie is based on a true story. I never knew that a unified Korean team had existed in the past. Since the real events took place in 1991, the filmmakers had access to media and first-hand accounts to better recreate the events in the film. Though no one really knows the details of how life is in North Korea, this film shined light on North Koreans’ limited access to the outside world and strict policies. The bonds formed between the North and South Korean athletes really struck me and made me reconsider my opinions or rather lack of opinions regarding reunification. I’d rather not delve into political issues, so I will leave it at that.

Second, Ha Ji Won and Bae Doo Na looked like real table tennis athletes. I was glad that they didn’t try to make the actresses look pretty. Athletes were shown as real athletes are, including the sweat-drenched hair and unflattering team uniforms. In addition, the real Hyun Jung Hwa trained the stars in table tennis prior to filming. Ha Ji Won learned to imitate Hyun Jung Hwa’s playing style and Bae Doo Na learned to play with her left hand, like the real Rhee Boon Hee.

My only concern for non-Korean viewers is that this film was made from the perspective of the Korean team. Therefore, the rival countries of the united Korean team were depicted in a rather exaggerated manner. As China was the united Korean team’s biggest rival, if you are of Chinese descent, I’d like to warn you that you might be offended by the movie’s portrayal of your country’s team. It’s not as bad as I’m making it seem, but it is definitely biased.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this film. While America has a long list of successful sports-related films, I wasn’t too sure about Korean filmmakers’ capabilities to move hearts with sports. I was moved by this film, and it reminded me of the football film ‘Remember the Titans‘ from 2000; two distinct teams forced to work together to achieve victory. I guess you can call it ‘Remember the Koreans‘.

'As One' is currently playing with English subtitles in select theaters in New Jersey, Philadelphia, Illinois, Los Angeles, and Canada. More information is available in our previous article about the movie's North American release.

Taecyeon apologizes to INFINITE fans for misunderstanding

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 01:40 AM PDT

2PM‘s Taecyeon sent an apology to INFINITE fans on Twitter.

His apology referred to the tweet exchanges between him and singer G.NA that had left some fans confused.

G.NA posted on the 8th after ‘M! Countdown‘, “Though I didn’t receive 1st place tonight, I want to thank everyone who voted me as a candidate alongside Baek Ji Young sunbae and INFINITE sunbae.”

Taecyeon later tweeted, “It’s odd to me that the kids from INFINITE are sunbaes to you, nuna.” G.NA responded, “It’s probably because I’m older. U guys r like major sunbae’s man (sic).

What seemed to ruffle the feathers of some INFINITE fans was the 2PM member’s next reply: “Major sunbae whatever. like i always say, we’re growing old together haha (sic).” The misunderstanding arose from his statement, “Major sunbae whatever,” as there were fans of INFINITE who felt that his comment was directed to their favorite group, along with not understanding the English portion (“like I always say, we’re growing old together haha”) of the tweet.

He later re-tweeted another post by an INFINITE fan: INSPIRITS (INFINITE’s fan club), the major sunbaes referred to were 2PM, not INFINITE, please don’t misunderstand.”

Taecyeon also tweeted to clarify, “I think some of you misunderstood~ I think it’s good that we work it out like this~ INFINITE congratulations on your two year anniversary, and I will be more cautious so that misunderstandings won’t arise in the future.” With 2PM fans and INFINITE fans continuing to argue, he added, “Okay let’s stop~~ Because both oppas are precious ^^,” asking everyone to stop the bickering.

Netizens commented, “I wish INFINITE fans don’t misunderstand,” “I think it arose because of the part in English,” and “I hope both 2PM and INFINITE succeed.”

Lee Hyori sends a video message to Jang Bum Joon on ‘Golden 12′

Posted: 09 Jun 2012 12:20 AM PDT

Lee Hyori comforted Busker Busker‘s Jang Bum Joon with a video message.

June 7th’s broadcast of On Style‘s ‘Golden 12‘ followed Lee Hyori and designer Yony P on their vacation to Hawaii.

The two friends visited Haleakala, famous for its sunset, and thought about the messages they wanted to send to the rest of the ‘Golden 12′ members.

For Jang Bum Joon, Lee Hyori sent the message: “Bum Joon. I know you got attacked a lot for asking me if my chest was big.” She was referring to when the members visited Jeju Island together, and Jang Bum Joon asked frankly, “How is your chest so big?” after seeing Lee Hyori’s swimsuit photo shoot.

Yony laughed as she added, “Yeah. You unintentionally turned Bum Joon into a very vulgar boy.” Lee Hyori responded, “Bum Joon is the one who said it, I didn’t tell him to say it. Bum Joon. I really don’t care about that so don’t pay attention to it.

M.I.B discuss how they’ve developed as a hip hop group since their debut

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 11:41 PM PDT

Hip hop group M.I.B is back with their latest album ‘Illusion‘ and a new contrast in style from their debut track, “G.D.M.“.

By combining modern melodies and dramatic raps, the group has switched from a rebellious debut image to that of a smoother one that’s already catching a lot of eyes.

Member Cream expressed, “We put our focus on conversing with the public through our emotions this time. By emphasizing Kangnam hyung’s vocals, we added some pop elements that I trust will allow us to get closer to the public and form the path we’ll be walking down in the future. In the beginning, we were focused on making our own music and showing that to the public, but this time, we’re taking in the feedback of the people around us.”

The members revealed that their mindsets have changed with their comeback. Although they debuted as a free-spirited hip hop group, they began to realize the importance of working with the public in developing their style.

5ZiC stated, “We wanted the public to let us approach them more comfortably. By switching our song title from English to Korean and by taking off my sunglasses and revealing my face, we wanted to just approach everyone comfortably. The members have all lost weight and gotten cooler looking, not that we still don’t look a bit countrified now. We do feel like we’ve gotten cooler compared to our first album, though.”

Although they’re just six months into their debut, the group went through a difficult April with the death of their stylists from a dorm fire the day of their comeback for “Celebrate“. The boys canceled their comeback stage and set aside promotions for “Celebrate”.

Kangnam stated, “The four of us had a really rough time. I never listened to ‘Celebrate’ again after what had happened. It’s a really great song, but I just couldn’t bring myself to listen to it again. I’m sure the other members feel the same way.”

The group buried the song deep in their hearts along with their sorrow over the loss of their stylists, but kept moving forward to show maturity and improvement with their next work.

5ZiC concluded, “I think we’ve lost a lot of the awkwardness on our stage now. We’ll work hard until our fans think it’s perfect.”

MBC ‘Infinity Challenge’ to resume broadcast?

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 10:30 PM PDT

For the past 19 weeks, MBC‘s headline variety program ‘Infinity Challenge‘ has been conspicuously missing. Its absence has served as, perhaps, the most significant reminder of  the ongoing labor strike by MBC workers against the broadcast station’s top brass, its CEO Kim Jae Chul, and the lack of journalistic freedom and integrity.

However, if recent rumors are to be believed, the gaping hole in MBC’s Saturday evening lineup could possibly be filled in the weeks to come. Unconfirmed reports state that the labor union and MBC are sitting down to discuss a solution, led by MBC’s variety department, which has been the biggest loser of the whole ordeal with ratings dropping and viewers leaving for competing networks.

In the case of another MBC variety, ‘We Got Married‘, it has recently confirmed that viewers can expect to see a new episode on June 16th due to the efforts of temporary crew members. This leaves only ‘Infinity Challenge’ as the lone variety program still maintaining its off-air status.

The cast and crew of ‘Infinity Challenge’ have also been reported to have picked up press passes for the upcoming 2012 Summer Olympics in London and working on clearing out their other schedules, further fueling the speculation about a possible return.

Posted: 08 Jun 2012 09:58 PM PDT

Defconn continued, “We were wondering whether to combine the ‘Don in Hyungdon and the ‘Con’ in Defconn to create ‘Doncon’ or other names like ‘xxBoss’ and ‘Errands Center’. Jae Suk hyung came over to feature one day so we asked him for a name. He simply said, ‘Hyung don and Dae joon’.”

They continued, “We believe the name fits our personality and musical color well so we’re very satisfied with it.”
